The training program for CARE Program fellows consists of the following:
- participation in Einstein’s Clinical Research Training Program (CRTP), including completion of a Master’s Thesis
- clinical work in substance abuse, including 1 day/week in a DoSA methadone clinic and a rotation with Montefiore’s inpatient Substance Abuse Consultation Service
- attendance at the foundation course in addiction psychiatry
- completion of a mentored research project supervised by an experienced NIDA-funded investigator
- participation in the CARE Educational Program, as a learner during the first fellowship year and a teacher during the second fellowship year
By the end of their 2 year fellowship, fellows have learned the skills necessary to work as clinician-investigators in drug abuse and addiction.
In addition to meeting all requirements of the CRTP, CARE Program fellows are expected to complete the following:
- submission of a complete application to the Institutional Review Boards at both Montefiore and Einstein
- preparation of a drug abuse related grant application to a federal agency or private foundation
- preparation of a research abstract for presentation at a national meeting
- preparation of a manuscript suitable for publication
