Social Pediatrics Residency Training

PGY-1 Year

The focus of the PGY-1 year of social pediatrics training is the development of a strong general pediatric knowledge base and inpatient skills, very similar to the first-year training in the categorical pediatrics program.

Social Pediatrics PGY-1 residents will have:

  • One call-free month orientation to Social Medicine with PGY-1 residents in Family Medicine and Social Medicine, focusing on principles in social medicine and community advocacy, as well as connecting with the Bronx community.
  • Attend weekly Social Pediatrics Rounds in additional to traditional pediatric curriculum.
 
 

PGY-2 and PGY-3 Years

In addition to the refinement of inpatient skills, the PGY-2 and PGY-3 year of the social pediatrics residency places an increased focus on ambulatory and community pediatrics including fundamentals of public health, leadership, evidence-based medicine and community-centered advocacy and research.

Through a unique partnership system, residents share a continuity practice and inpatient responsibilities with another social pediatric resident from the same year. The Social Pediatrics schedule differs from the categorical schedule as it includes 3 blocks of full time clinic each year, and one call-free elective during both PGY-2 and PGY-3 year.

Social Pediatrics Rounds and Tuesday Curruculum 

This core conference and curriculum is held weekly, providing social pediatrics residents advocacy training based on monthly themes such as:

Components of Tuesday afternoon curriculum also include home visits, a biopsychosocial case conference, housing and family court visits, juvenile detentions centers, community outreach, research presentations, journal club, film club & book club, policy rounds and board review. Residents also participate in several advocacy/lobby days in Albany.

There are also weekly Wednesday Continuity Clinic conferences at CHCC as well as bi-monthly Social Work Rounds and EBM rounds.

Social Pediatrics Graduates

Graduates of social pediatrics continue to work towards social justice by practicing in underserved inner-city health centers, community hospitals, rural and urban medical centers. Several of them serve as health policy advocates, health administrators, and leaders in community medicine.
