from Dr. Arthur Skoultchi, Chairmen of Department of
Cell Biology
"At the Einstein graduation ceremonies this past week,
Dr. Pamela Stanley was awarded the LaDonne H. Schulman
Award for Excellence in Teaching. As we all know, Pamela
is highly committed to the training of students and
postdoctoral fellows, in her formal classroom teaching
roles, in the her laboratory, and as the former Director
of the Cell and Molecular Biology and Genetics Training
Grant, as well as organizer of our WIP series and
numerous Cell Biology retreats.
Like Pamela, Dr. LaDonne Schulman, Professor of
Developmental and Molecular Biology, was an outstanding
teacher and a first-class researcher.
Congratulations to Pamela on another very well deserved
recognition of her contributions." |

the Department of Cell Biology hosted a one-day
symposium honoring the scientific achievements of Dr.
Jonathan R. Warner, the Joseph & Gertrud Buchler Chair
in Translational Medicine in the Department of Cell
Biology and Chairman of the department from 1983 to1998.
After the opening remarks by Dean Allen Spiegel and Dr.
Arthur Skoultchi, the current Chairman of Cell Biology,
a number of distinguished guests reflected on Dr.
Warner’s seminal discoveries in the field of ribosomal
biogenesis as well as ongoing scientific pursuits in
their own laboratories: Dr. James Darnell, Rockefeller
University. "Four-plus decades of science and
friendship"; Dr. Elaine Elion, Harvard University.
"Tailoring mitogen-activated protein kinase cascades for
differentiation and survival"; Dr. Alexander Rich, MIT.
"The biology of proteins that bind to left-handed
Z-DNA"; Dr. Stephen Udem, International AIDS Vaccine
Initiative. "Vaccines: so much we now can do but too
damned scared to do it!"; Dr. Joan Steitz, Yale
University. "Regulatory RNPs: Altering outcomes in gene
expression"; Dr. Ke Shuai, UCLA. "Protein SUMO ligases
in the regulation of cytokine signaling and immunity";
Dr. Masayasu Nomura, University of California-Irvine
School of Medicine. "Transcription of rRNA by RNA
polymerase I is functionally coupled to rRNA processing
and ribosome assembly". The scientific program concluded
with a talk by Dr. Warner entitled “Ribosomes, RNA, and
Friends.”
