2018 Honorary Alumnus Award

Dr. Allen Spiegel has been Einstein’s Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean for the past dozen years. Last year, he announced that 2018 would be his final year as dean. Upon arriving at Einstein in 2006, he spearheaded the College of Medicine’s first Strategic Research Plan and a Campus Master Plan. During his tenure, he guided the completion of the jewel of Einstein’s Jack and Pearl Resnick campus, the Michael F. Price Center for Genetic and Translational Medicine/Harold and Muriel Block Research Pavilion. During his deanship, Einstein recruited more than 40 scientists, appointed 15 new department chairs, established the Gottesman Clinical Skills Center and Education Center and founded the Gottesman Stem Cell Research Institute. Between 2007 and 2017, Einstein earned $1.8 billion in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, with annual funding peaking at $174 million this past year. Dr. Spiegel played a critical role in Einstein’s transition to join Montefiore Medicine in 2015. Before coming to Einstein, he was the director of the NIH’s National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. His research during a 33-year career at the NIH helped clarify the genetic basis of several endocrine diseases. Dr. Spiegel earned his B.A. summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Columbia University, received his M.D. cum laude and Alpha Omega Alpha from Harvard Medical School and completed his clinical training at Massachusetts General Hospital.
