Dr. Shivnath Ghosh is the current acting Chairman of the Department of Psychology at the Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. Dr. Ghosh’s visit to Depratment of Pediatrics to work with Dr. Chhabra at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, New York under the AITRP program was aimed at understanding the social and psychological perspective of HIV/AIDS research with a specific emphasis on developing ideas to focus on culture-specific issues in the areas of preventive HIV research. The aim of this partnership was to develop collaboration on international HIV/AIDS related programs and interventions with youth. As a result of this visit, Dr. Ghosh has been actively involved in developing research interest in HIV/AIDS and work for his students as well as setting up presentations and proposal for a Global Health Center for the University. He is also very involved in training trainers for School-based Teenage Education Program (STEP) on HIV/AIDS, drug & alcohol abuse and Cardiovascular Health (PI - Dr. Chhabra). He has been invited to share his expertise and his experience in this work at various institutions and universities in India. Dr. Ghosh is presently involved in developing innovative qualitative and quantitative techniques for future grant proposals focusing on education, prevention, testing and counseling for HIV/AIDS in the tribal and youth population of Himachal Pradesh.

Awards, fellowships related to AITRP work:
  1. Dr. Ghosh has been actively working on procuring grant support for the UGC (University Grant Commission) for setting up a Global Health Center at Himachal Pradesh University. The proposal has already gone through two levels of approval.

  1. Poster presentation at NIMH Annual International Research Conference on the, "Role of Families in Preventing and Adapting to HIV/AIDS" at San Francisco in 2007
  2. Work group discussion on Behavioral Interventions to Prevent HIV among Vulnerable Groups at "AIDS in India 2007: A Regional Workshop – Symposium to enhance HIV/AIDS Research Capacity" at Bangalore in 2008.
  3. Future presentation – We will be presenting a poster based on STEP work at the International AIDS Conference 2010 in Vienna in July 2010.
