Face to Face Training

REQUIREMENTS TO ATTEND FACE TO FACE TRAINING CLASSES:

  1. Have been cleared by Einstein's Occupational Health Services (Occ Health).  You must provide the IACUC with a copy of an email from Occ Health confirming that you have been medically cleared.  For additional information on how to obtain medical clearance, speak to your Department Administrator.
  2. Have completed all required CITI online training modules (see below).  You must provide completion reports to Trainer the day of the training session.
  3. Submitted an addendum to add personnel to an approved protocol.
  4. Must attend classes in the following order
    1. New Users Orientation to Research Animal Use at Einstein
    2. Safe & Humane Rodent Handling
    3. Sterile Survival Surgery (if you will be performing survival surgery).

Training Session #1: 

“New Users Orientation to Research Animal Use at Einstein” 

Mandatory for All 

CITI online training modules required: 

1) Working with the IACUC: Investigators, Staff and Students 

2) If handling fish, Fish Module, if handling Zebra Fish, Zebra fish module, and if handling frogs, - Amphibian module 

Training Session #2: 

“Safe and Humane Rodent Handling, Anesthesia, Analgesia and Euthanasia Hands-On” 

Mandatory for All Handling Rodents  

(You MUST participate in hands-on portion of training) 

CITI online training modules required:  

1) Modules related to specific rodent trainee will handle in the laboratory  

If you will be performing survival surgery, you must also complete one of the following training sessions: 

Training Session #3:  

“Sterile Survival Surgery for Rodents - Principles & Practices Hands-On” 

Mandatory if Performing Rodent Survival Surgery (You MUST participate in hands-on portion of training session) 

YOU MUST HAVE COMPLETED TRAINING SESSION #2 TO PARTICPATE IN THIS TRAINING SESSION. 

CITI online training modules required:  

1) Modules related to specific rodent that trainee will handle in the laboratory,  

2) Reducing Pain and Distress in Laboratory Mice and Rats  

3) Aseptic Surgery

Training Session #4:  

“Sterile Survival Surgery for Non-Rodent Species Hands-On” 

Mandatory for All Performing Survival Surgery on Non-Rodent Species  

(You MUST participate in hands-on portion of training) 

CITI online training modules required: 

1) Modules related to specific rodent that trainee will handle in the laboratory,  

2) Reducing Pain and Distress in Laboratory Mice and Rats, and  

3) Aseptic Surgery 

Once you have completed all required online and face to face training, you will be sent an email from the IACUC office providing instructions on how to arrange a brief tour of the animal facility in which you will be working.  However, you MAY NOT participate in animal research involving live animals until you receive an email stating that you have been approved as laboratory personnel.   

In addition to the above noted face to face training sessions, the training sessions listed below are offered on an as per need basis:     

  • How to Write Your Animal Use Protocol for Speedy Approval
  • Animal Necropsy Techniques - The purpose is to help researchers to identify tissues and organs and how to appropriately handle those tissues for their research.
